AVIF

AVIF AV1 Image File Format

AVIF stores images with the AV1 video codec. It usually beats WebP on file size, handles HDR and wide colour, and supports transparency. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16+ display it.

WebP Web Picture format

WebP is Google's web image format. It supports both lossy and lossless compression plus alpha transparency, and typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at similar visual quality. Every current browser displays it.

Why convert AVIF to WebP?

AVIF files turn up when you save images from sites that serve it to save bandwidth, and from image tools that export it for the web. Encoding is slow and many editors, CMSs and operating systems cannot open it yet. Choose WebP to make images load faster on a website while keeping transparency.

AVIF to WebP settings

Use the quality slider to balance size against detail; 80 to 90 percent is a good default for WebP. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.

Frequently asked questions

Will the WebP lose quality?

Both formats are lossy, so converting re-encodes the data once more. Using a high quality setting keeps the generational loss very small. Avoid converting the same file back and forth repeatedly.

Is transparency kept when converting AVIF to WebP?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so transparent areas in your AVIF stay transparent.

Will the WebP be smaller than the AVIF?

No, usually larger for photos: as a rough guide, the WebP comes out at around 1.3× the size of the AVIF, depending on the quality setting.
