AVIF AV1 Image File Format
AVIF stores images with the AV1 video codec. It usually beats WebP on file size, handles HDR and wide colour, and supports transparency. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16+ display it.
AVIF converterPNG Portable Network Graphics
PNG stores pixels with lossless DEFLATE compression and a full 8-bit alpha channel. It is the safe default for screenshots, logos, UI assets and anything with sharp edges or text, because every pixel survives exactly as drawn.

Why convert AVIF to PNG?
AVIF files turn up when you save images from sites that serve it to save bandwidth, and from image tools that export it for the web. Encoding is slow and many editors, CMSs and operating systems cannot open it yet. Choose PNG when you need exact pixels or transparency, for example to keep editing the image or place it on a coloured background.

You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.
Frequently asked questions
Will the PNG lose quality?
PNG is lossless, so the conversion keeps every pixel or sample that is in your AVIF file. It cannot bring back detail that AVIF compression already removed, and the PNG file will usually be larger.
Is transparency kept when converting AVIF to PNG?
Yes. PNG supports transparency, so transparent areas in your AVIF stay transparent.
Will the PNG be smaller than the AVIF?
No, usually larger for photos: as a rough guide, the PNG comes out at around 16× the size of the AVIF, depending on the quality setting.
