AVIF

AVIF AV1 Image File Format

AVIF stores images with the AV1 video codec. It usually beats WebP on file size, handles HDR and wide colour, and supports transparency. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16+ display it.

GIF Graphics Interchange Format

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame. It survives because it animates everywhere: chat apps, email clients and forums all play GIFs without a video player.

Why convert AVIF to GIF?

AVIF files turn up when you save images from sites that serve it to save bandwidth, and from image tools that export it for the web. Encoding is slow and many editors, CMSs and operating systems cannot open it yet. Choose GIF when the result has to loop in a chat app, forum or email client without a video player.

AVIF to GIF settings

GIF output is limited to 256 colours, which is ideal for simple graphics but can show banding in photos. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.

Frequently asked questions

Will the GIF lose quality?

GIF is lossless, so the conversion keeps every pixel or sample that is in your AVIF file. It cannot bring back detail that AVIF compression already removed, and the GIF file will usually be larger.

Is transparency kept when converting AVIF to GIF?

Yes. GIF supports transparency, so transparent areas in your AVIF stay transparent.

Will the GIF be smaller than the AVIF?

No, usually larger for photos: as a rough guide, the GIF comes out at around 6.0× the size of the AVIF, depending on the quality setting.
