What is a GIF file?
GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame. It survives because it animates everywhere: chat apps, email clients and forums all play GIFs without a video player. It is a lossless format best suited to short looping animations and simple graphics with few colours. The main drawback is that the 256-colour palette causes banding in photos, and animated GIFs are far larger than video.
Frequently asked questions
Will the JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the GIF original.
Is transparency kept when converting GIF to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.
