GIF Graphics Interchange Format
GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame. It survives because it animates everywhere: chat apps, email clients and forums all play GIFs without a video player.
GIF converterAVIF AV1 Image File Format
AVIF stores images with the AV1 video codec. It usually beats WebP on file size, handles HDR and wide colour, and supports transparency. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16+ display it.

Why convert GIF to AVIF?
GIFs come from chat apps, meme sites and screen-capture tools, and many of them are animated. The 256-colour palette causes banding in photos, and animated GIFs are far larger than video. Choose AVIF for the smallest web images, after checking that your CMS or upload target accepts it.
GIF to AVIF settings
Use the quality slider to balance size against detail; 80 to 90 percent is a good default for AVIF. Animated GIF files are converted using their first frame. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.
Frequently asked questions
Will the AVIF lose quality?
AVIF uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the GIF original.
Is transparency kept when converting GIF to AVIF?
Yes. AVIF supports transparency, so transparent areas in your GIF stay transparent.
Will the AVIF be smaller than the GIF?
Usually much smaller for photos: as a rough guide, the AVIF comes out at around 15% of the GIF's size, depending on the quality setting.
