GIF

GIF Graphics Interchange Format

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame. It survives because it animates everywhere: chat apps, email clients and forums all play GIFs without a video player.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression discards detail the eye is less sensitive to, which makes photos small enough for email, upload forms and print services that accept nothing else.

Why convert GIF to JPG?

GIFs come from chat apps, meme sites and screen-capture tools, and many of them are animated. The 256-colour palette causes banding in photos, and animated GIFs are far larger than video. Choose JPG when the file has to be accepted everywhere: upload forms, email, print shops and older software.

GIF to JPG settings

Use the quality slider to balance size against detail; 80 to 90 percent is a good default for JPG. Pick a background colour to replace transparent areas. Animated GIF files are converted using their first frame. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.

Frequently asked questions

Will the JPG lose quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the GIF original.

Is transparency kept when converting GIF to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.

Will the JPG be smaller than the GIF?

Usually much smaller for photos: as a rough guide, the JPG comes out at around 25% of the GIF's size, depending on the quality setting.
