PNG

PNG Portable Network Graphics

PNG stores pixels with lossless DEFLATE compression and a full 8-bit alpha channel. It is the safe default for screenshots, logos, UI assets and anything with sharp edges or text, because every pixel survives exactly as drawn.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression discards detail the eye is less sensitive to, which makes photos small enough for email, upload forms and print services that accept nothing else.

When PNG to JPG makes sense

A photograph exported as PNG can be several megabytes because PNG is lossless. Converting it to JPG at 85 percent usually cuts the size by 70 to 90 percent with no visible difference. Do not convert logos or screenshots with text: JPG blurs sharp edges and fills transparent areas with a solid colour, which you can choose under Background.

Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG files usually come from screenshots, design tools and image downloads, where lossless storage keeps edges crisp. Photographs saved as PNG are often 3 to 10 times larger than the same photo as JPG or WebP. Choose JPG when the file has to be accepted everywhere: upload forms, email, print shops and older software.

PNG to JPG settings

Use the quality slider to balance size against detail; 80 to 90 percent is a good default for JPG. Pick a background colour to replace transparent areas. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.

Frequently asked questions

Will the JPG lose quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the PNG original.

Is transparency kept when converting PNG to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.

Will the JPG be smaller than the PNG?

Usually much smaller for photos: as a rough guide, the JPG comes out at around 10% of the PNG's size, depending on the quality setting.
