PNG

PNG Portable Network Graphics

PNG stores pixels with lossless DEFLATE compression and a full 8-bit alpha channel. It is the safe default for screenshots, logos, UI assets and anything with sharp edges or text, because every pixel survives exactly as drawn.

WebP

WebP Web Picture format

WebP is Google's web image format. It supports both lossy and lossless compression plus alpha transparency, and typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at similar visual quality. Every current browser displays it.

Why convert PNG to WebP?

PNG files usually come from screenshots, design tools and image downloads, where lossless storage keeps edges crisp. Photographs saved as PNG are often 3 to 10 times larger than the same photo as JPG or WebP. Choose WebP to make images load faster on a website while keeping transparency.

PNG to WebP settings

Use the quality slider to balance size against detail; 80 to 90 percent is a good default for WebP. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.

Frequently asked questions

Will the WebP lose quality?

WebP uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the PNG original.

Is transparency kept when converting PNG to WebP?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so transparent areas in your PNG stay transparent.

Will the WebP be smaller than the PNG?

Usually much smaller for photos: as a rough guide, the WebP comes out at around 10% of the PNG's size, depending on the quality setting.
