JPG Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression discards detail the eye is less sensitive to, which makes photos small enough for email, upload forms and print services that accept nothing else.

WebP Web Picture format

WebP is Google's web image format. It supports both lossy and lossless compression plus alpha transparency, and typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at similar visual quality. Every current browser displays it.

Why convert JPG to WebP?

JPG is what most cameras, websites and phones set to Most Compatible hand you, so it is the usual starting point for photos. It cannot store transparency and every re-save loses a little more detail. Choose WebP to make images load faster on a website while keeping transparency.

JPG to WebP settings

Use the quality slider to balance size against detail; 80 to 90 percent is a good default for WebP. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.

Frequently asked questions

Will the WebP lose quality?

Both formats are lossy, so converting re-encodes the data once more. Using a high quality setting keeps the generational loss very small. Avoid converting the same file back and forth repeatedly.

Will the WebP be smaller than the JPG?

Usually a little smaller for photos: as a rough guide, the WebP comes out at around 90% of the JPG's size, depending on the quality setting.
