GIF

GIF Graphics Interchange Format

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame. It survives because it animates everywhere: chat apps, email clients and forums all play GIFs without a video player.

BMP

BMP Windows Bitmap

BMP is the uncompressed bitmap format native to Windows. Files are large because each pixel is stored raw, but almost every program, embedded device and legacy system can read it.

Why convert GIF to BMP?

GIFs come from chat apps, meme sites and screen-capture tools, and many of them are animated. The 256-colour palette causes banding in photos, and animated GIFs are far larger than video. Choose BMP only when a legacy program or device needs uncompressed bitmaps.

GIF to BMP settings

Pick a background colour to replace transparent areas. Animated GIF files are converted using their first frame. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.

Frequently asked questions

Will the BMP lose quality?

No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel or sample in your GIF is kept exactly.

Is transparency kept when converting GIF to BMP?

BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.

Will the BMP be smaller than the GIF?

No, usually larger for photos: as a rough guide, the BMP comes out at around 7.5× the size of the GIF, depending on the quality setting.
