What happens when you convert AVIF to BMP
| Compression | Lossy or lossless → Lossless |
|---|---|
| File size | Usually several times larger for photos |
| Transparency | Not supported: transparent areas get the background colour you pick (white by default) |
| Metadata | EXIF, GPS location and camera data are not copied to the new file |
| Opens in | Windows and almost every desktop program, but not most websites |
Sizes are typical values; your files will vary with content and settings.
AVIF AV1 Image File Format
AVIF stores images with the AV1 video codec. It usually beats WebP on file size, handles HDR and wide colour, and supports transparency. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16+ display it.
AVIF converterBMP Windows Bitmap
BMP is the uncompressed bitmap format native to Windows. Files are large because each pixel is stored raw, but almost every program, embedded device and legacy system can read it.

Why convert AVIF to BMP?
AVIF files turn up when you save images from sites that serve it to save bandwidth, and from image tools that export it for the web. Encoding is slow and many editors, CMSs and operating systems cannot open it yet. Choose BMP only when a legacy program or device needs uncompressed bitmaps.
AVIF to BMP settings
Pick a background colour to replace transparent areas. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.
Frequently asked questions
Will the BMP lose quality?
BMP is lossless, so the conversion keeps every pixel or sample that is in your AVIF file. It cannot bring back detail that AVIF compression already removed, and the BMP file will usually be larger.
Is transparency kept when converting AVIF to BMP?
BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.
Will the BMP be smaller than the AVIF?
No, usually larger for photos: as a rough guide, the BMP comes out at around 45× the size of the AVIF, depending on the quality setting.
