What is a BMP file?

BMP is the uncompressed bitmap format native to Windows. Files are large because each pixel is stored raw, but almost every program, embedded device and legacy system can read it. It is a lossless format best suited to legacy software, embedded displays and raw pixel workflows. The main drawback is that files are very large because there is no compression.

Frequently asked questions

Will the JPG lose quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the BMP original.

Will the JPG be smaller than the BMP?

Usually much smaller for photos: as a rough guide, the JPG comes out at around 5% of the BMP's size, depending on the quality setting.
