BMP Windows Bitmap
BMP is the uncompressed bitmap format native to Windows. Files are large because each pixel is stored raw, but almost every program, embedded device and legacy system can read it.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression discards detail the eye is less sensitive to, which makes photos small enough for email, upload forms and print services that accept nothing else.

Why convert BMP to JPG?
BMP files come from old Windows software, Paint, scanners and embedded devices that write raw bitmaps. Files are very large because there is no compression. Choose JPG when the file has to be accepted everywhere: upload forms, email, print shops and older software.
BMP to JPG settings
Use the quality slider to balance size against detail; 80 to 90 percent is a good default for JPG. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.
Frequently asked questions
Will the JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the BMP original.
Will the JPG be smaller than the BMP?
Usually much smaller for photos: as a rough guide, the JPG comes out at around 5% of the BMP's size, depending on the quality setting.
