What is a AVIF file?
AVIF stores images with the AV1 video codec. It usually beats WebP on file size, handles HDR and wide colour, and supports transparency. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16+ display it. It is a lossy or lossless format best suited to the smallest possible web images with high quality. The main drawback is that encoding is slow and many editors, CMSs and operating systems cannot open it yet.
Frequently asked questions
Will the JPG lose quality?
Both formats are lossy, so converting re-encodes the data once more. Using a high quality setting keeps the generational loss very small. Avoid converting the same file back and forth repeatedly.
Is transparency kept when converting AVIF to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.
