What is a PNG file?
PNG stores pixels with lossless DEFLATE compression and a full 8-bit alpha channel. It is the safe default for screenshots, logos, UI assets and anything with sharp edges or text, because every pixel survives exactly as drawn. It is a lossless format best suited to screenshots, logos, diagrams and images that need transparency. The main drawback is that photographs saved as PNG are often 3 to 10 times larger than the same photo as JPG or WebP.
Frequently asked questions
Will the JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the PNG original.
Is transparency kept when converting PNG to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.
