What is a WebP file?

WebP is Google's web image format. It supports both lossy and lossless compression plus alpha transparency, and typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at similar visual quality. Every current browser displays it. It is a lossy or lossless format best suited to websites, page-speed optimisation and transparent images on the web. The main drawback is that older desktop software, some print shops and many upload forms still reject it.

Frequently asked questions

Will the JPG lose quality?

Both formats are lossy, so converting re-encodes the data once more. Using a high quality setting keeps the generational loss very small. Avoid converting the same file back and forth repeatedly.

Is transparency kept when converting WebP to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.
