What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad. It uses HEVC compression to store photos at roughly half the size of JPG, but support outside Apple devices is patchy. It is a lossy format best suited to storing iPhone photos efficiently on Apple devices. The main drawback is that Windows, Android apps, websites and most upload forms cannot open it without conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Will the JPG lose quality?
Both formats are lossy, so converting re-encodes the data once more. Using a high quality setting keeps the generational loss very small. Avoid converting the same file back and forth repeatedly.
Will the JPG be smaller than the HEIC?
No, usually larger for photos: as a rough guide, the JPG comes out at around 1.7× the size of the HEIC, depending on the quality setting.
