What is a TIFF file?
TIFF is a flexible format used by scanners, publishers and photographers. It can hold uncompressed or losslessly compressed pixels, multiple pages and high bit depths. It is a lossless format best suited to scans, print production and archival masters. The main drawback is that files are large and web browsers cannot display TIFF directly.
Frequently asked questions
Will the JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the TIFF original.
Is transparency kept when converting TIFF to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.
