FLAC

FLAC Free Lossless Audio Codec

FLAC compresses audio losslessly to around 50 to 60 percent of WAV size. Decoding gives back the exact original samples, so it is the format of choice for archiving music.

Why convert FLAC to Opus?

FLAC files come from CD rips and lossless music stores such as Bandcamp and Qobuz. Files are much larger than MP3 and some portable players cannot play them. Choose Opus for voice recordings and low bitrates, where it sounds better than MP3 or AAC at the same size.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Opus lose quality?

Opus uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the FLAC original.

Will the Opus be smaller than the FLAC?

Usually yes: a minute of audio takes about 6.4 MB as FLAC and about 1.4 MB as Opus at 192 kbps. Lower the bitrate to shrink it further; 128 kbps is plenty for speech.
