AAC Advanced Audio Coding
AAC is the successor to MP3 and the audio codec inside most MP4 videos, YouTube and Apple Music. A raw .aac file is an ADTS stream without a container.

Why convert AAC to Opus?
Raw AAC files come from some phone recorders, internet radio streams and audio pulled out of videos. Raw .aac files have no chapter or cover-art support and some players skip them. Choose Opus for voice recordings and low bitrates, where it sounds better than MP3 or AAC at the same size.
Frequently asked questions
Will the Opus lose quality?
Both formats are lossy, so converting re-encodes the data once more. Using a high quality setting keeps the generational loss very small. Avoid converting the same file back and forth repeatedly.
Will the Opus be smaller than the AAC?
About the same: a minute of audio takes about 1.4 MB as AAC and about 1.4 MB as Opus at 192 kbps. Lower the bitrate to shrink it further; 128 kbps is plenty for speech.
