FLAC Free Lossless Audio Codec
FLAC compresses audio losslessly to around 50 to 60 percent of WAV size. Decoding gives back the exact original samples, so it is the format of choice for archiving music.
FLAC converterMP3 MPEG-1 Audio Layer III
MP3 is the most compatible audio format in existence. Every phone, car stereo, browser and editor plays it, and 128 to 320 kbps gives small files that sound good for music and speech.

Why convert FLAC to MP3?
FLAC files come from CD rips and lossless music stores such as Bandcamp and Qobuz. Files are much larger than MP3 and some portable players cannot play them. Choose MP3 when the audio must play on any device, car stereo or upload form.
Frequently asked questions
Will the MP3 lose quality?
MP3 uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the FLAC original.
Will the MP3 be smaller than the FLAC?
Usually yes: a minute of audio takes about 6.4 MB as FLAC and about 1.4 MB as MP3 at 192 kbps. Lower the bitrate to shrink it further; 128 kbps is plenty for speech.
