MKV is an open container that can hold almost any codec plus multiple audio tracks and subtitles. It is popular for archived films and series.

GIF Graphics Interchange Format

GIF is a 1987 format limited to a 256-colour palette per frame. It survives because it animates everywhere: chat apps, email clients and forums all play GIFs without a video player.

Why convert MKV to GIF?

MKV is common for films, TV episodes and OBS recordings, because one file can hold several audio and subtitle tracks. iPhones, browsers and most social networks will not play MKV files. Choose GIF when the result has to loop in a chat app, forum or email client without a video player.

Making a good-looking GIF

Set the start time and duration, frame rate and width. 10 to 15 fps at 480 pixels wide gives a smooth GIF that stays shareable in chat apps. The converter generates an optimised colour palette for your clip, which avoids the muddy colours of a generic palette.

Frequently asked questions

Will the GIF lose quality?

GIF is lossless, so the conversion keeps every pixel or sample that is in your MKV file. It cannot bring back detail that MKV compression already removed, and the GIF file will usually be larger.

Questions about privacy, file-size limits or conversion speed are answered in the general FAQ.
