ICO is a container that holds one or more square icon images at different sizes. Browsers use it for favicon.ico and Windows uses it for application and shortcut icons.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression discards detail the eye is less sensitive to, which makes photos small enough for email, upload forms and print services that accept nothing else.

Why convert ICO to JPG?
ICO files are Windows icons and website favicons, and one file often holds several sizes. Icons are limited to 256×256 pixels and must be square. Choose JPG when the file has to be accepted everywhere: upload forms, email, print shops and older software.
ICO to JPG settings
Use the quality slider to balance size against detail; 80 to 90 percent is a good default for JPG. Pick a background colour to replace transparent areas. You can also cap the width and height, which resizes large photos in the same step.
Frequently asked questions
Will the JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the ICO original.
Is transparency kept when converting ICO to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any background colour in the options before converting.
