M4A is an MPEG-4 container holding AAC audio. iPhone voice memos, iTunes purchases and many recorders save M4A, and it sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate.

Why convert WAV to M4A?

WAV files come from voice recorders, audio editors, Windows Sound Recorder and sample libraries. One minute of CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB. Choose M4A for smaller files than MP3 at the same quality, played natively by Apple devices and modern players.

Frequently asked questions

Will the M4A lose quality?

M4A uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see. Raise the quality slider if you need the result to stay closer to the WAV original.

Will the M4A be smaller than the WAV?

Usually yes: a minute of audio takes about 10.6 MB as WAV and about 1.4 MB as M4A at 192 kbps. Lower the bitrate to shrink it further; 128 kbps is plenty for speech.
